Google has some form of its AI in many of its products, including the sentence autocompletion found in Gmail and on the company’s Android phones. Lemoine published a transcript of some of his communication with LaMDA, which stands for Language Model for Dialogue Applications. Using this technique, engineers at Microsoft trained Tay’s algorithm on a dataset of anonymized public data along with some pre-written material provided by professional comedians to give it a basic grasp of language. Eventually, her programmers hoped, Tay would sound just like the Internet. Each of the bots was created using an open source AI language model called GPT-2 that was originally developed by OpenAI, an artificial intelligence lab co-founded by Elon Musk. OpenAI unveiled GPT-2 earlier this year, and it’s probably the most advanced system of its kind, capable of generating text in a variety of formats, from jokes to stories to songs.
